Crabeater Seals soaking up a short summer, Antarctica

Crabeater Seals soaking up a short summer, Antarctica

from £150.00

I made this image in Antarctica whilst on expedition. Our ship gained a big seal following as we went about our business. Hundreds of seals followed to see what we were up to. This day they got to take a 20 hour break as we got stuck, or beset, in the ice, ironically in the very same area that Shackleton's ship endurance was beset in 1915.
The sea often looks jet black in Antarctica which was a surprise to me. The greens and yellow on the ice below the water line are phytoplankton, known also as micro algae, they are essential food for the krill which in-turn feed the seals.
